There are ten critical areas where your ability to think largely determines the success or failure of your business. The greater clarity you have in each of these areas, the better decisions you will make and better results you will achieve.

 

Key Purpose

What is the purpose of a business? Many people think that the purpose of a business is to earn a profit, but they are wrong. The true purpose of a business is to create and keep a customer. Fully 50 percent of your time, efforts, and expenses should be focused on creating and keeping customers in some way.

 

Key Measure

The key measure of business success is customer satisfaction. Your ability to satisfy your customers to such a degree that they buy from you rather than from someone else, that they buy again, and that they bring their friends is the key determinant of growth and profitability.

 

Key Requirement

The key requirement for wealth building and business success is for you to add value in some way. All wealth comes from adding value. All business growth and profitability come from adding value. Every day, you must be looking for ways to add more and more value to the customer experience.

 

Key Focus

The most important person in the business is the customer. You must focus on the customer at all times. Customers are fickle, disloyal, changeable, impatient, and demanding–just like you. Nonetheless, the customer must be the central focus of everything you do in business.

 

Key Word

In life, work, and business, you will always be rewarded in direct proportion to the value of your contribution to others, as they see it. The focus on outward contribution, to your company, your customers, and your community, is the central requirement for you to become an ever more valuable person, in every area.

 

Key Question

The most important question you ask, to solve any problem, overcome any obstacle, or achieve any business goal is “How?” Top people always ask the question “How?” and then act on the answers that come to them.

 

Key Strategy

In a world of rapid change and continuing aggressive competition, you must practice continuous improvement in every area of your business and personal life. As Pat Riley, the basketball coach, said, “If you’re not getting better, you’re getting worse.”

 

Key Activity

The heartbeat of your business is sales. Dun & Bradstreet analyzed thousands of companies that had gone broke over the years and concluded that the number-one reason for business failure was “low sales”. When they researched further, they found that the number-one reason for business success was “high sales.” And all else was commentary. This may seem obvious, but it is true!

 

Key Number

The most important number in business is cash flow. Cash flow is to the business as blood and oxygen are to the brain. You can have every activity working efficiently in your business, but if your cash flow is cut off for any reason, the business can die, sometimes overnight.

 

Key Goal

Every business must have a growth plan. Growth must be the goal of all your business activities. You should have a goal to grow 10 percent, 20 percent, or even 30 percent each year. Some companies grow 50 percent and 100 percent per year, and not by accident. The only real growth is profit growth. Profit growth is always measurable in what is called “free cash flow.” This is the actual amount of money that the business throws off each month, each quarter, and each year, above and beyond the total cost and expense of running a business.

 

Action Exercise

You should have a growth plan for the number of new leads you attract and for the number of new customers you acquire from those leads. You should have a growth plan for sales, revenues, and profitability. If you do not deliberately plan for continuous growth, you will automatically stagnate and begin to fall behind. Growth is not an accident; so you must plan and map out your growth plan if you want your business to see a bright future.

The Five W’s of Time Management for Entrepreneurs

Every writer needs to know the Five W’s of good Journalism: Who, What, Where, When, Why (and sometimes How).

What about the rules of Time Management? They are equally important to help you focus on your most important priorities; those that only you can, and should, do. Ask yourself the following questions, and see how much time you may be able to free up:

Who

Ask yourself: “Who really needs to do this? Am I the only person who can do it? Am I the best person to do it?”

If there is someone else who can do it, even if not quite as perfectly as you would, delegate it to them. It may be bookkeeping, Virtual Assistance, blog writing, web design, or any number of activities. If it is not something you excel at, someone else can do it faster and better than you.

What

Ask yourself: “What is the single most important project or task I have on my list that will make the biggest impact on accomplishing my goals?” Work on that task first every day.

Then ask yourself, “What is the next most important task I can work on that will make the biggest impact on accomplishing my goals?  Do that one next.

Use a To Do List, review it each morning, and plan what you will do that day, and when.  Often, the most important things you could do, are the ones you least want to do. Do those first and get them out of the way. Reward yourself in some small way for accomplishing them.

Where

Ask yourself: “Do I have a place where I can work uninterrupted? Is my workspace organized so I can find everything easily? How much time do I spend daily looking for something?”

If you don’t have an organized workspace, consider hiring a Professional Organizer to help you set up your paper files and workspace. And to keep on top of things, hire an Assistant to come in regularly to clean up your files.

When

Ask yourself: “When am I most productive? Most creative? Am I an early bird, or a night owl?”

Understanding when your brain operates at peak efficiency, and then blocking that time in your calendar for work, can help you work more, faster, and better, than if you are tired or distracted.

FOCUS; carve out time to accomplish those big, fat, juicy priorities, the ones that will get you where you want to go faster. Schedule them in your calendar and protect the time.  Make it a meeting with yourself that you cannot move. Mark it in red. Focus on the work at hand. Do not move to another task until you have completed the task you set yourself to do.

Why

Ask yourself: “Why am I doing this? Does it contribute to accomplishing the goals I have for my business and my life? Is it my priority, or someone else’s?”

Focus your efforts on only those tasks that contribute to accomplishing your priorities, and consider outsourcing or delegating others.

How

Ask yourself: “Is this the most productive way to accomplish this task?  Do I need to do it to perfection, or can I stop when I have accomplished 80 per cent? Are there ways to simplify the process?”

Even before you start, decide what your end product needs to look like; when it is good enough, stop. There are times when perfection is needed, and times when it is not, and sometimes it is better just to get the work done and out the door.

Learn how to use the tools and technology that you will need all the time. Take a course on Excel or PowerPoint, book an appointment with the Small Business Advisor at your local Apple store and have them show you how to use your iPhone or iPad to its maximum capabilities. Talk to other entrepreneurs about the Apps they use and how they can simplify your work, and then start using them.

By following these steps, you can achieve better control of your time and accomplish the most important priorities on your To Do list if you: (1) plan, (2) link your activities to your goals, and (3) work when you function best.

Beauty is more than skin deep. In fact, our internal health plays just as important a role in our skin health as what we put on the surface. This is because skin grows fast; really, really fast!

Every day, your body gets rid of 30,000 to 40,000 skin cells. This process, called “sloughing” (pronounced “slaw-ffing”) means that our top layer of skin cells, called the epidermis, is completely replaced with new cells every twenty-seven days.

This growth and re-growth puts a huge demand on the body. A balanced diet, consisting of certain key nutrients that are crucial for maintaining healthy skin, helps the sloughing process and eases the toll it takes on the body.

The first and most commonly cited vitamin for skin health is vitamin C. There is no doubt that vitamin C plays an important role in healthy, vibrant skin as it is essential for stimulating the formation of collagen. Collagen is the body’s most abundant protein, making up 25 to 35 per cent of the total protein in our body. This jelly-like protein makes up tendons and ligaments, the cushions between joints; cartilage in our nose and ears; and adds structure to the middle layers of the skin. Extensive research has shown benefits of both topical applications and adequate intake of vitamin C through a balanced diet or supplementation. This helps to reduce the appearance of skin wrinkles and improves skin texture and strength. Many of these benefits are a result of the role vitamin C plays in collagen synthesis.

A lesser-known nutrient that can also boast benefits to skin health is Vitamin B3, or nicotinamide. This essential nutrient plays many roles in the body, including repairing damaged DNA. Numerous studies have also found that topical application of nicotinamide can improve the appearance of age spots, reduce wrinkles and improve skin elasticity.

 

Another common “skin-sational” nutrient is vitamin A. This nutrient which, according to Health Canada, many Canadians do not get enough of from our diets, is most important for the healthy growth of new cells. Considering that the top layer of skin has five distinct layers and that we lose 30,000 to 40,000 skin cells every day, it’s clear why getting enough Vitamin A is essential. Vitamin A is common in anti-acne skin care products and is one of the first line approaches to stimulating collagen synthesis in the skin, promoting strong connective tissue and, in turn, producing fuller, healthier skin.  Since Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin, you should speak with your health care practitioner to ensure your body is absorbing the right dose, from diet, natural health products, or topical applications.

Spirulina is a blue-green algae superstar that is often found in tablet form or as an ingredient in Greens powder supplements. As a natural health product, Spirulina plantensis is high in protein, vitamins and antioxidants, and is highly nutritious. NASA considered it as a key food source for long-term space travel. It’s out-of-this-world-nutrition! When it comes to skin, research has shown that supplementing with spirulina reduces inflammation after UV exposure and helps preserves the long-term health of the skin, while promoting a healthy glow.
